In 1966, A. K. Rozhdestvensky published the name Probactrosaurus. The name means “before Bactrosaurus.”

It lived in the Early Cretaceous (Aptian · Albian), roughly 121.4 to 100.5 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Miaogou Formation. It was a herbivore and could move on two or four legs.

Published estimates put Probactrosaurus at a length near 5.5 m, hips about 1.7 m high, and a body mass around 1 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Hadrosauroidea, among the ornithopod dinosaurs.
