The story in short

Altirhinus was formally named in 1998 by D. B. Norman. The name means “high nose.”

It lived in the Early Cretaceous (Albian), roughly 113.2 to 100.5 million years ago. Finds come from Mongolia, including the Khuren Dukh Formation. It was a herbivore and could move on two or four legs.

Published estimates put Altirhinus at a length near 6.5–8 m, hips about 2.5 m high, and a body mass around 1.1 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Hadrosauroidea, among the ornithopod dinosaurs.
