In 1977, P. Taquet and S. P. Welles published the name Piveteausaurus. The name means “jean Piveteau.”
Fossils referred to Piveteausaurus date to the Middle Jurassic (Callovian), roughly 165.3 to 161.5 million years ago. Finds come from France, including the Marnes de Dives Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Piveteausaurus at a length near 11 m.
