Leshansaurus was formally named in 2009 by F. Li and colleagues. The name means “leshan lizard.”
Fossils referred to Leshansaurus date to the Middle Jurassic · Late Jurassic (Bajocian–Oxfordian), roughly 170.9 to 154.8 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Shaximiao Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Leshansaurus at a length near 6 m, hips about 1.7 m high, and a body mass around 1 tonnes.
