Planicoxa was formally named in 2001 by T. DiCroce and K. Carpenter.

It lived in the Early Cretaceous (Aptian), roughly 121.4 to 113.2 million years ago. Finds come from the United States, including the Cedar Mountain Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Planicoxa at a length near 4.5 m, hips about 1.4 m high, and a body mass around 450 kg.
