The story in short

In 1939, C. C. Young published the name Omeisaurus. The name means “omei lizard.”

It lived in the Middle Jurassic · Late Jurassic (Bajocian–Oxfordian), roughly 170.9 to 154.8 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Shaximiao Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.

Published estimates put Omeisaurus at a length near 14–20.2 m, hips about 3 m high, and a body mass around 4–9.8 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Mamenchisauridae, among the sauropod dinosaurs.

This entry is the whole genus. The type species is Omeisaurus junghsiensis. Other named species include Omeisaurus tianfuensis, Omeisaurus jiaoi, and Omeisaurus puxiani.
