Asfaltovenator was formally named in 2019 by O. W. M. Rauhut and D. Pol. The name means “cañadón Asfalto Formation hunter.”

It lived in the Early Jurassic · Middle Jurassic (Toarcian · Aalenian · Bajocian), roughly 184.2 to 168.2 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the Cañadón Asfalto Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Asfaltovenator at a length near 7–8 m and a body mass around 1 tonnes.
