Teratophoneus was formally named in 2011 by T. D. Carr and colleagues.
It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Campanian), roughly 83.6 to 72.2 million years ago. Finds come from the United States, including the Kaiparowits Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Teratophoneus at a length near 6–8.7 m and a body mass around 0.7–2.5 tonnes.
