The genus Sciurumimus dates to 2012, the year O. W. M. Rauhut and colleagues described it. The name means “squirrel mimic.”

Fossils referred to Sciurumimus date to the Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian), roughly 154.8 to 149.2 million years ago. Finds come from Germany, including the Torleite Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Sciurumimus at a length near 1 m, hips about 0.2 m high, and a body mass around 2 kg.

On the family tree it sits in Tetanurae, among the theropod dinosaurs.
