Saltriovenator was formally named in 2018 by C. Dal Sasso and colleagues. The name means “saltrio hunter.”
It lived in the Early Jurassic (Sinemurian), roughly 199.5 to 192.9 million years ago. Finds come from Italy, including the Saltrio Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Saltriovenator at a body mass around 1.2–1.6 tonnes.
