Protohadros was formally named in 1998 by J. J. Head. The name means “first hadrosaur.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), roughly 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago. Finds come from the United States, including the Lewisville Formation. It was a herbivore and could move on two or four legs.

Published estimates put Protohadros at a length near 6 m.
