The genus Petrobrasaurus dates to 2011, the year L. S. Filippi and colleagues described it. The name means “petrobras lizard.”
Fossils referred to Petrobrasaurus date to the Late Cretaceous (Coniacian · Santonian), roughly 89.8 to 83.6 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the Plottier Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.
Published estimates put Petrobrasaurus at a length near 18 m, hips about 3.3 m high, and a body mass around 13 tonnes.
