Muyelensaurus was formally named in 2007 by J. O. Calvo and colleagues. The name means “muyelen lizard.”

Fossils referred to Muyelensaurus date to the Late Cretaceous (Coniacian · Santonian), roughly 89.8 to 83.6 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the Plottier Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.

Published estimates put Muyelensaurus at a length near 11 m, hips about 2.4 m high, and a body mass around 2.5 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Rinconsauria, among the sauropod dinosaurs.
