The genus Mamenchisaurus dates to 1954, the year C. C. Young described it. The name means “mamenchi lizard.”
It lived in the Middle Jurassic · Late Jurassic (Callovian–Tithonian), roughly 165.3 to 143.1 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Shaximiao Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.
Published estimates put Mamenchisaurus at a length near 13–35 m, hips about 3.1 m high, and a body mass around 5–45 tonnes.
