In 2007, M. D. Ezcurra and G. Cuny published the name Lophostropheus. The name means “crest vertebrae.”

It lived in the Late Triassic · Early Jurassic (Rhaetian · Hettangian), roughly 205.7 to 199.5 million years ago. Finds come from France, including the Moon-Airel Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Lophostropheus at a length near 6.2 m and a body mass around 100–136 kg.
