In 1995, R. A. Coria and L. Salgado published the name Giganotosaurus. The name means “giant southern lizard.”
It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), roughly 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the Candeleros Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Giganotosaurus at a length near 13 m and hips about 5.5 m high.
