In 1964, S. Y. Hu published the name Chilantaisaurus. The name means “jilantai Salt Lake lizard.”
Fossils referred to Chilantaisaurus date to the Early Cretaceous (Aptian · Albian), roughly 121.4 to 100.5 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Miaogou Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Chilantaisaurus at a length near 11–11.9 m, hips about 2.4 m high, and a body mass around 2.5–4 tonnes.
