Beibeilong was formally named in 2017 by H. Pu and colleagues.
Fossils referred to Beibeilong date to the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian · Turonian), roughly 100.5 to 89.8 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Gaogou Formation. It was an omnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Beibeilong at a length near 7.5 m and a body mass around 1.5–2 tonnes.
On the family tree it sits in Caenagnathidae, among the theropod dinosaurs.
