The story in short

In 2005, A. W. A. Kellner and colleagues published the name Baurutitan. The name means “bauru giant.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), roughly 72.2 to 66 million years ago. Finds come from Brazil, including the Serra da Galga Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.

Published estimates put Baurutitan at a length near 12–14 m, hips about 3.5 m high, and a body mass around 15 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Aeolosaurini, among the sauropod dinosaurs.

Close relatives
