The story in short

The genus Xingxiulong dates to 2017, the year Y. M. Wang and colleagues described it. The name honors a person tied to the fossil or its study.

Fossils referred to Xingxiulong date to the Early Jurassic (Hettangian), roughly 201.4 to 199.5 million years ago. Finds come from China, including the Lufeng Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Xingxiulong at a length near 4–5 m, hips about 1–1.5 m high, and a body mass around 460 kg.

On the family tree it sits in Sauropodiformes, among the early long-necked dinosaurs.

Close relatives
