The story in short

In 1998, P. C. Sereno and colleagues published the name Suchomimus. The name means “crocodile mimic.”

It lived in the Early Cretaceous (Aptian · Albian), roughly 121.4 to 100.5 million years ago. Finds come from Niger, including the Elrhaz Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Suchomimus at a length near 9.5–11 m and a body mass around 2.5–3.8 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Baryonychinae, among the theropod dinosaurs.
