The genus Mongolostegus dates to 2018, the year T. A. Tumanova and V. R. Alifanov described it. The name means “mongolian roof.”
Fossils referred to Mongolostegus date to the Early Cretaceous (Aptian · Albian), roughly 121.4 to 100.5 million years ago. Finds come from Mongolia, including the Zuunbayan Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.
Published estimates put Mongolostegus at a length near 6 m, hips about 1.8 m high, and a body mass around 1.4 tonnes.
