The story in short

The genus Maxakalisaurus dates to 2006, the year A. W. A. Kellner and colleagues described it. The name means “maxakali lizard.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Campanian · Maastrichtian), roughly 83.6 to 66 million years ago. Finds come from Brazil, including the Adamantina Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.

Published estimates put Maxakalisaurus at a length near 12.1 m, hips about 2.8 m high, and a body mass around 5 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Aeolosaurini, among the sauropod dinosaurs.
