The story in short

Koleken was formally named in 2024 by D. Pol and colleagues. The name means “coming from clay and water.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian), roughly 72.2 to 66 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the La Colonia Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Koleken at a length near 5 m, hips about 1.5 m high, and a body mass around 520 kg.

On the family tree it sits in Furileusauria, among the theropod dinosaurs.

Close relatives
