Jakapil was formally named in 2022 by F. J. Riguetti and colleagues. The name means “crest stone.”
Fossils referred to Jakapil date to the Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian), roughly 100.5 to 93.9 million years ago. Finds come from Argentina, including the Candeleros Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.
Published estimates put Jakapil at a length near 1.5 m and a body mass around 5–7 kg.
