The story in short

The genus Austroposeidon dates to 2016, the year K. L. N. Bandeira and colleagues described it. The name means “southern Poseidon.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Campanian · Maastrichtian), roughly 83.6 to 66 million years ago. Finds come from Brazil, including the Presidente Prudente Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on four legs.

Published estimates put Austroposeidon at a length near 25 m, hips about 3.8 m high, and a body mass around 40 tonnes.

On the family tree it sits in Colossosauria, among the sauropod dinosaurs.
