In 2004, P. J. Currie and D. J. Varricchio published the name Atrociraptor. The name means “savage robber.”
Fossils referred to Atrociraptor date to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian · Maastrichtian), roughly 83.6 to 66 million years ago. Finds come from Canada, including the Horseshoe Canyon Formation. It was a carnivore and walked on two legs.
Published estimates put Atrociraptor at a length near 1.8–2 m, hips about 0.6 m high, and a body mass around 15 kg.
