The story in short

Aepyornithomimus was formally named in 2017 by T. Chinzorig and colleagues. The name means “aepyornis mimic.”

It lived in the Late Cretaceous (Campanian), roughly 83.6 to 72.2 million years ago. Finds come from Mongolia, including the Djadokhta Formation. It was a herbivore and walked on two legs.

Published estimates put Aepyornithomimus at a length near 3 m, hips about 0.8 m high, and a body mass around 50 kg.

On the family tree it sits in Ornithomimidae, among the theropod dinosaurs.
